In early 2000, Jason took me for a drive around his town. Along the way we passed a farm belonging to an old teacher of his. They were raising hairy, long horned cattle- known as Scotch Highlands. A very unusual breed for sure. I instantly fell in love. And that was the beginnings of Highland Hills farm.

In 2003, Jason asked the girls and I to become his family and as an engagement present gave me Samson and Delilah, our first Highland cattle and our breeding pair. So along with my old boy, Adam, we started piecing together our farm. Next we needed to find a home for our dream.

Jason and I looked for the perfect piece of property for our farm for over two years, finally finding our current property. It had everything we wanted. In 2004, Highland Hills Farm was built. With an A&B Barns 36x48 barn and a 3 bedroom house, the Mix family moved in.

Soon after the farm grew as Delilah had her first calf, Dennis, and Ashleigh purchased her horse, Marshal Dillon. The farm blossomed. With trails galore for riding, and horse people to ride with we settled in. Now, 5 years later, we are growing again. We have had two more calves, Chuck and Daphne; retired one good ole boy; Adam, and added another horse- Harley. With one daughter on her own and another heading to college- Jason and I have focused again on the farm. We decided to box in the rest of the barn and offer boarding.

There is a lot of work left to be done…. but we figure as long as we keep working, the farm will keep prospering… and our dreams will come true.
